How to Evaluate a Co-Managed IT Provider

Not every provider offering “co-managed IT” actually structures the relationship around your existing team, or is honest about what they deliver within business hours versus what they don't. Here's what to check before signing anything.

Do they scope jointly, or dictate?

A genuine co-managed provider defines scope together with your internal IT team during onboarding, not as a take-it-or-leave-it package. If a provider proposes a scope before ever speaking with your internal staff, that's a signal they may be structured for full outsourcing, not true co-management.

Are they honest about support hours?

Ask plainly: is support staffed 24/7, or during business hours only? Automated monitoring tooling can run continuously, but that's different from a staffed after-hours helpdesk. A credible provider will tell you exactly when their team is actually reachable, rather than letting "monitoring" language imply round-the-clock human coverage.

Do they respect your internal team's ownership?

Your in-house IT team typically handles tasks such as strategic IT planning, project management, and troubleshooting complex IT issues that require business context. A good co-managed provider is explicit about which responsibilities stay internal, and doesn't quietly try to expand into them over time.

Questions worth asking directly

Before signing, ask: how is scope defined, and can it change? What are the actual support hours, and what happens outside them? How long has the provider operated, and what's their track record? What size businesses do they typically work with?
